Answer
Is there a tutorial for my cPanel?
Sure! Our clients do not have access to all the functions of the cPanel, but you may get more information here
Does Sound Web Development offer 24/7 support?
I'm sorry, but Sound Web Development does not provide 24/7 support (24 hours a day, seven days a week). Please see our Support Page for more information.
Why is this the best solution to my needs?
Many schools provide webspace for their programs. Why should you pay for this solution over theirs? EASE OF USE 1. URL - Can you remember your school's URL? Me either. Isn't it something like http://www.myschooldist.k12.mi.us/? Who can remember that? certainly NOT your parents and community. You need to register a Domain Name that is memorable and useful! 2. Set-up - How long does it take to set up our websites? SECONDS! If you pay by credit card/PayPal, you can literally have your site up and running (and useful) in seconds! Try to do THAT on your school server! 3. Updating - Many schools teach their staff how to create websites using Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver. Some of you have had training and know how much of a pain in the neck creating and operating a website can be! Say GOODBYE to all that pain! Nearly all the content on your site is able to be updated through your Web-Browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape). This is the advantage of a Content Management System (CMS). You can update your website from ANY internet-enabled location! Update your website from Home, School, Vacation, even on a school trip! 4. Current - Our sites are so easy to use that you'll be updating your site often - maybe even daily! You'll start to rely on the information there and so will your community! When that occurs, you know you've got a valuable site! Websites that change often and stay current keep their users coming back often and this is critical to making your site a vital part of your program! 5. Divide the Work - YOU don't have to do all the work! IN this system, you can enable others (parents, assistants, students, etc) to contribute and even manage your site! As they say, "many hands make light work," and you can lighten your own load by getting help! The position of Sound Web Development is that most dedicated educators don't have the time or the inclination to learn how to install and configure all this software on their own. They would rather spend that time with their family and students. Sound Web Development provides School Districts the opportunity to have a functional website for a reasonable price without the hassle of working out all the details!
How Do I register a Domain Name?
Sound Web Development is happy to take care of that for you as a part of the sign-up process at no additional cost. We will register your selected domain name for a one-year period. After that, you are responsible to renew that domain name yearly. We will be happy to assist you with that when the time comes. You are also welcome to register your own domain name at other sources on the Internet and transfer those domain names to your account here. If you already have a domain name, it is a simple process to "point" your domain name to your new Sound Web Development account.
Is my credit card information totally safe with you?
As we use a third party credit card processor (PayPal), we don't have your credit card information with us. And therefore we don't store your credit card information on our system. We trust your credit card information is totally secure.
Yes, you can upgrade at any point. Just send an email to sales@soundwebdev.com and let them know you want to upgrade. They will prorate what you have used so far of your current plan cost. No there is no charge for upgrading in hosting plans!
Can I try your system before deciding?
Sure, we can give you a 30 day money back promise, if we fail we provide what is outlined in our website, we will refund you all your money.
Are you a reseller of another hosting provider?
Yes. We are a reseller of HostDime.com.
How soon will my account be activated?
Most Accounts are activated instantly! In the case we need to confirm billing, we will contact you. 99% of the time, account activation is instant! (Obviously if you use the Mail-in payment option, we will wait for your payment to arrive before activating your account).
Can I use a School Purchase Order to open my account?
Sure! Simply print out the "printer friendly" invoice at the end of the sign up process and submit that to your accounting department. When we receive your PO, we will activate your account and bill your district. It will be faster however to pay with a credit card or PayPal.
I already have a domain, can I use it with your hosting? what are the steps?
Yes,if you already have a domain you can use it with our hosting plans. The first step is going to www.soundwebdev.com and selecting the hosting plan of your choice. Then follow the steps to the order form. Select "I already have a domain I would like to use" on the order form. Note this will not transfer your domain from your current registrar where you registered the domain, this will only transfer the hosting if it is already hosted. After you paid for the hosting you will receive an email with all your login information to the server. You MUST also login into your domain control panel where ever you registered the domain and modify the NAMESERVERS or DNS to ours, our nameservers will be in the welcome email, you must make those changes in order for your website to be live.
What will happen when my site go over the data transfer limit?
The system has the capability to block sites that exceed their data transfer limit. This will be done at the owner's option of course, so you will have the choice to continue using more data transfer and pay more at the end of the month, or stop using more data transfer but no need to pay more at the end of the month.
How Do I access my website control panel?
CPanel may be accessed at http://www.yoursite.com/cpanel
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the simplest and most secure way to exchange files over the Internet. Whether you know it or not, you most likely use FTP all the time. The most common use for FTP is to download files from the Internet. When downloading a file from the Internet you're actually transferring the file to your computer from another computer over the Internet. This is why the T (transfer) is in FTP. You may not know where the computer is that the file is coming from but you most likely know it's URL or Internet address. Here at Sound Web Development, we manage our very own FTP server. Which means, you can upload files the same way as you download them. Upload is basically the exact opposite from downloading a file, such that rather than transferring a file from another computer over the Internet to your own, you are transferring a file TO another computer over the Internet. Please read our next section on how to SET UP an FTP session on your computer. :-)
Do I need a special program to use FTP?
No, but we recommend that you do find one. You may access a free FTP Manager within your control panel for you to use (with nothing to install!). However, you'll have to upload each file one at a time and it can get time consuming. There are, in fact, several free FTP Editors on the web and we recommend you to check out CuteFtp or zdnet downloads and perform a search for FTP editors (take note that some may require some form of payment if you like them.. but others will allow you to use them free of charge with the exception of some features).
With our CPanel software this is really easy to configure. Host: A) If you have domain access, just enter: ftp.yourdomain.com or your master IP Address provided in your activation email B) if you haven't established your URL enter: 111.111.111 (of course, replace 111.111.111 with your server IP) Main UserName: simply enter the username created for you on account activation or for additional UserNames: (must add within control panel) username@yourdomain.com Password: (password) If you have ANY problems with this, please contact us at support@soundwebdev.com
How many FTP Accounts do I have?
As with anything, FTP resources come at a cost. So, we have limited the number of accounts you can create per plan you purchase from us. :-) Please look at the plan you purchased it shall say there how many ftp accounts you may use.
In what directory should I upload my files?
In the following folder: /public_html/ Or if you need the FULL root URL: /home/username/public_html Where USERNAME is the username given to you in your Activation Email.
Is there a certain file limit for my uploads?
No. (only your webspace limit)
I made a ftp account with a new user/pass but what is the url to his/her folder?
Simply http://www.yourdomain.com/~username/ Of course, replace USERNAME with the name of the FTP user you have created and, obviously, replace 'yourdomain' with your domain name. :-) If you have ANY problems with this, please contact us at support@soundwebdev.com
In this example, we are using WS_FTP Pro 7.5. You will want to configure your WS_FTP information to the following specifications: Host name: 111.111.111 (replace 111.111.111 with the IP of your server: this is found in your Activation Email) UserID: your master username Password: your master password Account: you may leave this blank Comment: you may leave this blank Anonymous: UNCHECKED Save Password: check at your own risk Save Account: you may leave this unchecked Passive Mode: UNCHECKED Secure (SSL): you may leave this UNCHECKED As always, If you have ANY problems with this, please contact us at support@soundwebdev.com
In this example, we are using CuteFTP 5.0 XP. You will want to configure your CuteFTP information by going to the Site Manger (File>Site Manager or pressing F4), selecting New... and configuring your information to the following specifications: Label for site: you may enter anything here to help you organize your site from others. :) Host name: 111.111.111 (replace 111.111.111 with the IP of your server: this is found in your Activation Email) FTP site User Name: your master username FTP site Password: your master password FTP site connection port: 21 Login Type: Normal As always, If you have ANY problems with this, please contact us at support@soundwebdev.com
Do you recommend any Mac FTP programs?
Yes, We recommend CaptainFTP (http://www.captainftp.com/) which is a commercial application ($25), but works VERY well. Setup is very similar to the programs above. If you have any problems with this, please contact support@soundwebdev.com or the folks at CaptainFTP!
There are two ways: 1) By webmail. Each account comes with it's own NEOMAIL web client. Which means you can access your email from ANYWHERE in the world! Simply point your browser to http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail/. :-) 2) And our favorite. Simple edit your POP3 E-Mail software to automatically retrieve your email. Simply configure your email software for a POP3 Email Account with the following information below: Incoming Mail Server (POP3): mail.YOURDOMAIN.xxx (replace .xxx with your extension) Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): mail.YOURDOMAIN.xxx UserName: you@YOURDOMAIN.xxx Password: (your password)
How do I login to my control panel?
All you need is your URL (ex: www.yourdomain.com) followed by (:2082/) So point your browser to http://www.yourdomain.com:2082/ Just replace yourdomain.com with your URL to your website! It's that simple! IF YOU HAVE JUST SETUP YOUR ACCOUNT, then simply enter the following until you get your domain up and running: http://1111.1111.1111:2082/ Of course, replace 1111.1111.111 with the IP of your server provided to you in your activation email. :) And as always, if you have ANY problems with this, please contact us at support@soundwebdev.com
