MSVMA ACTIVITIES
State Choral Festival was held at CMU on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 6 and 7, 2008. Concert Choir turned in the performance of a lifetime. I can probably think of a half-dozen moments in my entire singing career that were the equal of our performance, and for sheer awesomemess I don't know if anything compares to the big moment in Bogo that we created in the clinic room (Chamichian) with our judge, Dr. Jose Rivera. Read some of the judges's comments below.
We were the only choir over two days to receive only one number in every category from every judge: the number 1. Even powerhouse schools like Traverse City West and Roscommon did not score that well. Just brilliant!
Here are some of the judges's comments: rhythmic energy is exceptional in Dulaman....Rachmaninoff is NOT EASY...for pro...choirs. WOW!....beautiful line....suspensions are brought out....great dynamics....this is a first rate choir....FANTASTIC....singers really connected with this motet....wonderful performance....excellent musicianship....first-rate, top-notch....highlight of the day....very musical, very mature ensemble....stylistic attributes [are] really excellent....gorgeous....

News: Concert Choir to perform in Detroit
Sunday, May 25, 2008 Posted by Mr. P.
Concert Choir will sing at noon after the service at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church, one of Detroit's most beautiful. It houses one of the greatest Aeolian Skinner pipe organs that Skinner ever built, in a contemporary English gothic stone edifice. The church was built by the Dodge brothers (yes, those Dodges) in the 20s. Both my mother's parents and my own parents were married there. This is a homecoming of sorts, as many of my extended family will be in attendance. They will be hearing a group under my direction for the first time. Joining us will be our own Superintendent, Dr. Joe Pius. Afterwards we will be eating brunch at the Detroit Yacht Club as guests of my Uncle Howard and Aunt Sharon Riley, my mother's brother.

Concert Choir rocks Cleveland
Sunday, May 25, 2008 Posted by Mr. P.
Good morning!
At yesterday's Heritage Festival Cleveland, Concert Choir added to its year-long list of successes with a fine performance and a sweep of all the awards. The judges awarded us scores of 96, 97, and 98 points out of 100.
We were the only ensemble in any division (band, choir, orchestra, open, classic, competetive) to score 90 points or more, earning a Gold Award. This also earned us an invitation to future Heritage Festivals of Gold, which are open only to ensembles who score at the Gold Award level. We won a trophy for being Outstanding Choral Group. By averaging 95 points or more we earned an invitation to Carnegie Hall in New York City. Finally, we were given the Adjudicator's Award, which is presented to the best ensemble of the Festival which averages 95 points or higher. It is not awarded if it is not earned!
What a great day for MPHS! Mt. Pleasant be proud!

News: Cleveland Heritage Festival
Monday, May 19, 2008 Posted by Mr. P.
There will be a parent meeting TONIGHT to make plans for the trip to Cleveland. Everything is in place to go except for the final committment from families and singers. We need dollar amounts, final count of who will go to Cleveland, who will join us in Detroit, etc.
After our performance for the Board and NHS we will go across the hall to the choir room and discuss the trip in detail.
The meeting should last about one hour, until maybe 8:15.

The December 2007 Madrigal Dinner at Buck's Run was a huge success. Thanks to all singers, players, parents, VMB members, BR staff, and audience members for making it our best one ever.
Next year's will also be in December. We hope to go back to Buck's Run again. Any feedback regarding this event is appreciated, and can be given to the director or to any member of the Vocal Music Boosters. |
